Sears, Roebuck and Co., commonly known as Sears (/ s ɪər z / SEERZ), [6] is an American chain of department stores founded in 1892 by Richard Warren Sears and Alvah Curtis Roebuck and reincorporated in 1906 by Richard Sears and Julius Rosenwald, with what began as a mail-order catalog company migrating to opening retail locations in 1925, the first in Chicago. In the 1990s, Sears abandoned its retail operation at the location, and the building was used by Hechinger hardware until its demise in the late 1990s. [2] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places, on February 16, 1996. It was the location of the second Art-O-Matic, from September 29 to October 28, 2000. [3]
