Etzikom is a hamlet in Alberta, Canada within the County of Forty Mile No. 8. [2] It is approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) east of Foremost on Highway 61. Etzikom was founded in 1915. [3] Its name comes from the Blackfoot language word for valley or coulee, referring to Etzikom Coulee.
In the 1940s there were outbreaks in Banff National Park and Kootenay national Park that also spread to the Kananaskis area. In the 1920s and again in the late 1950s there were outbreaks in Waterton Lakes National Park. In the 1970s and 1980s the outbreak spread into Alberta in the Castle River valley and Waterton Lakes National Park from Montana.
