A friend of mine who is a world class fisherman, who at one time was an owner in a lodge on Christmas Island and would spend a couple of months there each and in a year or two fishes places that most of us have on our lifetime bucket list, was a certified Tibor person but after many years eventually changed to Abel Big Game reels when he encountered (what he said) a couple of corrosion issues ...
These are good, but I still like the old Tibor designs better for their simplicity and their durability. Also, the Everglades will cost you about $135 less than the Signature 7/8. In addition, the standard Tibor reels have proven themselves to be bulletproof in any conditions and extremely reliable."
Tibor and Abel. For freshwater trout fishing while using very light tippets like 2 and 4 pound I prefer the Tibor Spring Creek reels over the Abel Super4Ns. Reason being the Tibor drag has a much better start up friction than the Abel. When a 30 inch brown or bow eats and takes off the Tibor‘s superior start up friction drag means less break ...
Looking for information on these old-school Billy Pate Tibor reels. I’m curious on what year they were manufactured and the history on these old school Fly Reels I may be interested in selling if anyone has some interest thanks again.
1995: introduction of the original Tibor reels with the original round porting 2001 or 2002: addition of the Pacific to the Tibor series 2004: introduction of the Tibor QC series 2008: Tibor series spool porting updated to "second generation" style 2010: introduction of the Signature Series for 35th anniversary 2012: Tibor QC series discontinued
Tibor is not unknown to issues. My barely used riptide quick change malfunctioned in Belize and you could max out the drag and get only about a 1/3 of the drag it should be. Also after being sent back to Tibor there was a bearing failure. This reel was only a year old, and had never had a fish onthe reel. I also maintain my gear top notch.

The high-end reels at that time were Abel’s, Billy Pates, and Islander fly reels. All were standard arbor fly reels. Large Arbor reels were sold by Loop. The Tibor reels bridged that gap (Large Arbor) for dedicated saltwater fly fisherman. As an original idea in design, machining and functionality the Tibor reels were trend setting.
The demand for the standard Tibor series reels is tremendously high right now and their supply chain has been constrained like everyone else’s. I know the lead time on custom Signature orders is a year right now but they’re regularly delivering reels to dealers and they go out the door about as fast as they come in.
