Each NPA is identified by one or more numbering plan area codes (NPA codes, or area codes), consisting of three digits that are prefixed to each local telephone number having seven digits. A numbering plan area with multiple area codes is called an overlay. Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes.
Some geographic area codes are similar to the toll-free codes, e.g., 801, 818, 860. Toll-free numbers are also sometimes confused with 900-numbers, for which the telephone company bills the callers at rates far in excess of long-distance service rates for services such as recorded information or live chat.
Where there is a page listing all area codes for that state or country, each area code listed on it should point back to the state's area code list page. If there is only one area code for the country or state, then it is placed on that area code page, e.g. [[Area code 302|Delaware]] .
