Scrabble is an American television game show based upon the board game Scrabble. Contestants competed in a series of rounds to fill in words within a crossword puzzle for cash. Muriel Green of Exposure Unlimited developed the idea for a television game show based upon the board game concept.
The Computer Edition of Scrabble is a game which features on-screen versions of the game board, tiles, and game pieces. The game uses a clock for which the user can define the time limit for turns, in which the player must place a word before the time runs out. The game also has options for lightning-timing and tournament-timing to be used instead.
In the United States, the PC version of Scrabble sold 260,000 copies and earned $2.5 million by August 2006, after its release in July 2000. It was the country's 78th best-selling computer game between January 2000 and August 2006.
Scrabble is a word game in which two to four players score points by placing tiles, each bearing a single letter, onto a game board divided into a 15×15 grid of squares. The tiles must form words that, in crossword fashion, read left to right in rows or downward in columns and are included in a standard dictionary or lexicon.
The gameplay of Scrabble Complete is nearly identical to that of the board game. Like other computer adaptations of popular board games, Scrabble Complete has additional features which allow the game to be customized; Players have the ability to tilt the board in different directions to change the viewpoint of the game board.
Three game show pilots featuring Edwards as host included Get Rich Quick! in 1977 for Bob Stewart and ABC, Pandemonium in 1979 for Jay Wolpert and CBS, and a 1990 pilot of a potential syndication run of the mid-80s NBC game show Scrabble. Neither of these three pilots were picked up.
Alongside the English language version of Scrabble the company also produced the first Afrikaans language version of the game under the name Krabbel, an Afrikaans translation of "Scrabble". Alfapet was the original Swedish name for the popular word game Scrabble. An edition from the 1990s. The motto Det Klassiska Korsordsspelet means "The classic crossword puzzle game" A game of Alfapet played in Loviisa, Finland. In 1954, the Swedish board game company Alga was granted a license by J. W. Spear & Sons to market Scrabble in Sweden.
