The Socialist Group is one of the parliamentary groups in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (known as the North Atlantic Assembly until 1999). It consists of members of social democratic and democratic socialist parties from NATO member states, who are members of their countries' national parliaments, for example of members of the British Labour Party and the Social Democratic Party of Germany.
All members have militaries, except for Iceland, which does not have a typical army (but it does have a coast guard and a small unit of civilian specialists for NATO operations). Three of NATO's members are nuclear weapons states: France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. NATO has 12 original founding member states.
