The 1972 Chevelle SS top engine was rated at 270 net hp (201 kW), conforming with GM's decree that all engines would be rated at their net engine ratings. All other engines on the SS roster were unchanged from 1971. 1972 was the last year for the cowl induction option for the 454 cid engine and was not even mentioned in the 1972 Chevelle brochure.
All SS models come with distinctive "SS" markings on their exterior. The SS package was first made available for the 1961 Impala . [ 1 ] Some of the other models bearing the SS badge include the Camaro , Chevelle , El Camino , Impala , Monte Carlo , Nova and some trucks like the Silverado and S-10 , as well as the TrailBlazer SUV.

The four-door station wagons of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle line were renamed for the 1969 model year. The base-trim Chevelle 300 was renamed Nomad, while the medium-trim Chevelle 300 Deluxe was changed to Greenbrier. The top-of-the-line station wagon model of the Chevelle Malibu 135/136 became the Concours and Concours Estate Wagon.
The third generation Chevelle was an extensively used body style in NASCAR competition from 1973 to 1977. The Chevelle Laguna S-3 in particular was extremely successful. Its sloped nose, small rear quarter windows and "fastback-style" rear glass gave it an aero advantage over other GM body styles at NASCAR's fastest tracks.
The Chevelle Malibu SS continued to eat away at the Nova SS market: Out of 122,800 Chevy IIs built for 1965 (compared to 213,601 Falcons), only 9,100 were Super Sports. For 1965, Chevy II had the dubious distinction of being the only car in GM's lineup to suffer a sales decline.
Between 1966 and 1969 the L78 was the highest-horsepower engine available in Chevrolet's intermediate line via a Regular Production Option (RPO). Despite this, in 1969 an L72 427 cu in (7.0 L), 425 hp (317 kW) engine could be ordered in an intermediate via a Central Office Production Order (COPO).
Trim levels initially were the LS and SS, the latter being the first front-drive SS in the Chevrolet lineup. The LS used a 3.4 L OHV V6, while the SS used the 3.8 L V6.
