Quercus nigra, the water oak, is an oak in the red oak group (Quercus sect. Lobatae), native to the eastern and south-central United States, found in all the coastal states from New Jersey to Texas, and inland as far as Oklahoma, Kentucky, and southern Missouri. [3] It occurs in lowlands and up to 450 meters (1,480 feet) in elevation.
Lloyd C. Griscom received 4,000 acres (1,600 ha) on the west side naming it Luna Plantation while Frances C. Griscom, a sportswoman, received 7,000 acres (2,800 ha) of the old plantation to the east and named it Water Oak Plantation. The mixed pine-oak forests occur on dry or sandy soils or in areas exposed to occasional fires. Longleaf pine ( Pinus palustris ), superbly adapted to fire-prone environments, was the principal tree in many of these forests; however, extensive logging and human development have reduced this trees occurrence to less than 5% of its former range.
