The painting of the mural was commenced on March 26, 2013 by more than 1,000 individuals who planned to complete a 4-kilometer mural. [1] On July 27, 2013, the mural was inaugurated. Nemesio Miranda Jr. was born in Angono, Rizal on February 14, 1949. He began drawing at age five and was inspired by Filipino comic books illustration Francisco Coching and later by the Filipino muralist Botong Francisco.
Among his paintings, the "Brown Madonna" garnered attention in 1938 because of its depiction of Jesus and Mary as non-Caucasian, brown Filipinos; It was also said to be "flat and two-dimensional". He, along with Victorio C. Edades and Carlos V. Francisco, painted the mural "Rising Philippines" in the lobby of the Capitol Theater in Manila.
