Merv Griffin's Crosswords (also simply called Crosswords) is an American game show based on crossword puzzles. The show was created by its namesake, Merv Griffin, who died shortly after beginning production on the series. Ty Treadway was the host, [2] and Edd Hall was the announcer.
Four three-letter words are shown to the teams, each word is the starting point for a word chain. One team chooses a starting word, and the host reads a clue to another word (which may be a proper noun or abbreviation); the player must change one letter in the starting word to make the correct word (e.g., CAT to CUT).
The game is played among three contestants. On a player's turn, they choose one of 8, 9, 10, or 11 words on the board, identifying it in the same way as a regular crossword puzzle (i.e., 1-across, etc.). The contestant is shown the first unrevealed letter in the word, and a clue is given.
The contestants compete to answer separate sets of 26 questions, whose answers each start with a different letter from A to Z in order (with the exception of X, which can appear anywhere in the word). Only one contestant plays at any moment, using the time on their own clock; the opponent's clock is stopped.
The final round of the game is the Countdown Conundrum, in which the contestants are shown a combination of two or three words with a total of nine letters. They have 30 seconds to form a single word using all the letters and must buzz in to respond (a bell for the champion and a buzzer for the challenger).
Before they play their word, each team chooses from one of two hoppers of "Lucky Balls," from which a ball is drawn: gold "money balls" add a cash bonus (either $100, $500, or $1,000) on top of the value of the word if solved, while white "letter balls," numbered between 1 and 10, reveal the corresponding letter in the word before the money ...
