James Marfell Scudamore CB was the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) of the United Kingdom and for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) from April 1997 until he retired March 2004, [1] [2] and prior to this he was Assistant Chief Veterinary Officer, Scotland from 1990 to 1996. [3]
After two years in general practice as a veterinary surgeon, he joined the State Veterinary Service, as a veterinary officer, and worked there during the 1967 foot-and-mouth outbreak. [2] His tenure as CVO coincided with the Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) epidemic, [2] to which he led the government's response. [3]
As CVO, Reynolds was the British government's main spokesperson on animal health, [1] and was in the British nationwide news repeatedly to explain policy and answer questions about outbreaks or control of serious animal infections, such as foot-and-mouth disease, H5N1 bird flu, bovine TB, rabies and bluetongue virus.
In 2011, the firm partnered with the U.S. Army to provide Army veterinarians and technicians preparing to deploy to areas of conflict with hands-on emergency veterinary experiences at the firm's hospitals. [15] The program is a nine-day schedule where the soldiers experience first-hand medical veterinary emergencies. [16]
