A two-acre Village Green was created opening the vista to the harbor. The new Stony Brook Village Center, which now housed many of the existing businesses of old Stony Brook, was completed in the summer of 1941, and the least merchant opened December 7, 1941. It has long been recognized as the first planned shopping center in the country.
Melville settled in the Stony Brook area in western Suffolk County on Long Island, where he owned much land. [7] He served as a member of the school board in Setauket, where he donated the land for the high school. From 1948 to 1949 he was the 66th President of the Saint Andrew's Society of the State of New York. [8]

Its name came from the older, original "Three Villages" of Setauket, Stony Brook and Old Field after the merger of the Stony Brook and Setauket school districts in the 1960s. Ward Melville , a local philanthropist, was a proponent of the Three Village school district, and contributed land for its new schools.
