The Philbrook Farm Inn stands in a rural area in eastern Shelburne, on the north side of North Road overlooking the flood plains of the Androscoggin River to the south, as well as portions of the White Mountains. The main building of the inn is a rambling 2-1/2 story wood-frame structure, consisting of a c. 1834 farmhouse with numerous additions.
Shelburne is drained by the Androscoggin River. Part of the Mahoosuc Range is in the north, while the northern end of the Carter-Moriah Range is to the south. The highest point in Shelburne is on the town's southern boundary at 3,970 feet (1,210 m) above sea level, just a few steps north of the 4,049-foot (1,234 m) summit of Mount Moriah.
The region shares its name with Dartmouth College, a prestigious Ivy League institution, and Lake Sunapee, a popular tourist destination. Interstate 89 forms the main freeway connecting the region to other parts of New Hampshire, as well as to nearby Vermont. Lebanon, Hanover, and Claremont are the three most populous communities in the region.
