www.newportschools.org Newport School District ( NSD ) is a public school district based in Newport, Arkansas . Established in 1876, NSD supports more than 1,500 students in prekindergarten through grade 12 in the 2010–11 school year by employing more than 260 faculty and staff on a full time equivalent basis for its five schools.
The assumed course of study at Newport High School exceeds the Smart Core curriculum developed by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE). Students engage in regular and Advanced Placement (AP) coursework and exams to obtain at least 24 units beyond the 22 units required by the Smart Core curriculum.
There were previously multiple elementary schools, with seven in operation as of 1997, [5] and six in operation in the mid-2000s. The relatively small schools remained in operation even though the city is only 7.7 square miles (20 km 2) large; members of the Newport community wished to keep them open as they wanted their children to be in walking distance of their elementary schools.
The most significant factor impacting student progress in Newport’s schools is the ineffective deployment of support systems, particularly in addressing students’ diverse needs.
