Brooklyn Heights' first library was founded in 1857 by the Mercantile Library Association of the City of Brooklyn. The first BPL branch in the neighborhood, the Montague Street branch, was opened in 1903. The Brooklyn Heights branch building at 280 Cadman Plaza West opened in 1962 and originally contained an auditorium and children's room.
The new building, a 36-story condominium with the new public library at the base, is 409 feet (125 m) tall with total floor area of 407,907 square feet (37,895.8 m 2) including residential parking spaces. [14] The new public library occupies 26,620 square feet (2,473 m 2) of space and has a dedicated entrance at 286 Cadman Plaza West. [15]

The Business & Career Library was a branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) at 280 Cadman Plaza West in Brooklyn Heights, near Downtown Brooklyn, in New York City. Its history precedes that of the BPL itself. In 1852, prominent citizens established the Brooklyn Athenaeum and Reading Room for the instruction of young men.
