606 (pronounced six-oh-six) is a weekend early evening football phone-in programme, broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live throughout the British football season. It covers topics relating to the current affairs of football in the United Kingdom.
The BBC and Sky Sports show a vidiprinter during their scores and results programmes. Their vidiprinters appear at the start of the 3 pm kick-offs until just after 5 pm when all the results are in although Sky Sports keeps the vidiprinter onscreen whilst the channel broadcasts its classified check and sometimes it stays on screen when the presenter goes through the updated league tables.
The demand for live televised football grew in the wake of England’s World Cup success, though the authorities remained reluctant. In April 1967, the Football League Management Committee rejected a £1m offer from BBC Television to show live League football on Thursday nights. They did, however, experiment with pay-per-view broadcasting.
Initially called Score Interactive, the programme broadcast from 14:30 and provided a rolling mix of scores, reports and punditry. At 16:30, BBC One joined the programme and after the end of the BBC One broadcast, it would continue on the interactive service until 18:00. In November 2007 a midweek version of the programme was introduced.
The only other football match that would be shown live on the programme would be the England v Scotland match in the Home International Championship which from 1971 to 1982 was shared with the BBC, and the 1984 match, which was the final match in the last ever Home International Championship, was live as part of World of Sport.
