The bridge's name comes from serving as a midpoint or middle bridge for the Cape Coral bridges – Cape Coral Bridge is south, and the Caloosahatchee Bridge is located north.
At the other end, CR 884 was extended east of McGregor Boulevard into Cape Coral in 1997 with the completion of the Midpoint Memorial Bridge and Veterans Parkway, a limited-access highway with an interchange at Del Prado Boulevard (CR 867A).
