Lewis T. Dent (also known as Louis Dent, March 3, 1823 – March 22, 1874) was an American explorer, judge, and politician. He was the brother-in-law of Ulysses S. Grant. Dent was born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1823, the son of Frederick Dent and Ellen Wrenshall. He was one of four older brothers of Julia Dent Grant, the future First Lady. [1]

Alcorn, Republican and moderate planter who had previously served in the Confederate Army, defeated National Union Republican Party nominee Judge Lewis Dent, the brother-in-law of President Ulysses S. Grant and former Union Army official.
Dent County is a county in Missouri.As of the 2020 census, the population was 14,421. [1] The largest city and county seat is Salem. [2] The county was officially organized on February 10, 1851, and is named after state representative Lewis Dent, a pioneer settler who arrived in Missouri from Virginia in 1835.
The Dent family was highly social, with visitors coming from among the elite class of Cincinnati, Louisville, and Pittsburgh. [3] William Clark (of Lewis and Clark) and politician Alexander McNair were family friends. [3] As a young woman, Grant was a skilled pianist, an expert horsewoman, and a voracious reader of novels. [3]
Dent was born on December 17, 1820, in White Haven, St. Louis County, Missouri. He was the son of Frederick Fayette Dent (1787–1873) and Ellen Bray (née Wrenshall) Dent (1793–1857). [1] He graduated from West Point in 1843. One of Dent's classmates was Ulysses S. Grant, who married Dent's sister Julia.

Marmaduke Herbert Dent (April 18, 1849 – September 11, 1909) was a West Virginia soldier, lawyer, politician and judge of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals (1893-1904). [ 1 ] Early and family life
