Sanford is a village in Midland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 813 at the 2020 census . [ 2 ] The village is located within Jerome Township .
Sanford Lake was a man-made reservoir located in Midland County, Michigan, but is no longer present since the failure of the dam in May 2020. It was formed by the damming of the Tittabawassee River near the village of Sanford, Michigan .
The village of Sanford is in the eastern part of the township. According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 35.7 square miles (92 km 2 ), of which 32.6 square miles (84 km 2 ) are land and 3.0 square miles (7.8 km 2 ), or 8.52%, are water. [ 1 ]
In May 2020, Midland County residents in parts of the city of Midland, the village of Sanford, Edenville Township, Midland Township, Tittabawassee, Thomas Township, Saginaw Township, Lincoln Township, Homer Township and Dow Chemical were forced to evacuate due to high flooding which was caused by the breach of the Edenville and Sanford dams. Significant communities on or near the Tittabawassee River include Saginaw, Midland, and Sanford. At Edenville, the river was impounded by the hydroelectric Edenville Dam to create Wixom Lake . It was also impounded by a hydroelectric dam in Sanford to create Sanford Lake prior to the dam failures and resulting flooding on May 19, 2020.
Edenville Dam was an earthen embankment dam at the confluence of the Tittabawassee River and the Tobacco River in Mid Michigan, United States, forming Wixom Lake.The dam was about one mile (1.6 km) north of Edenville, mostly in the southeast corner of Tobacco Township in Gladwin County, with its southeastern end reaching into Edenville Township in Midland County.
The township is in central Midland County, bordered to the southeast by the city of Midland, the county seat, and to the west by the village of Sanford.According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 23.4 square miles (61 km 2), of which 23.3 square miles (60 km 2) are land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km 2), or 0.41%, are water.
