To use a colour in a template or table you can use the hex triplet (e.g. #CD7F32 is bronze) or HTML color name (e.g. red).. Editors are encouraged to make use of tools, such as Color Brewer 2 to create Brewer palettes, listed at MOS:COLOR for color scheme selection used in graphical charts, maps, tables, and webpages with accessibility in mind for color-blind and visually impaired users.

If the template is used with no parameters it defaults to the American spelling of color. On pages which use the Commonwealth spelling colour, {{colour topics}} can be used. Alternatively, this template can be used if one parameter is passed {{Color_topics|colour}} More than one parameter will be ignored.
If the template has a separate documentation page (usually called "Template:template name/doc"), add [[Category:Color templates]] to the <includeonly> section at the bottom of that page.
Note: When hovered over, the template shows the value used for color as a tooltip by default. This is also heard by a screen reader. An optional parameter, |description= can be used to change that to something more user-friendly, as shown in the third example.
This template is used on approximately 5,800 pages and changes may be widely noticed. Test changes in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage . Consider discussing changes on the talk page before implementing them.
