a JRPG is defined as a franchise which: (1) is considered a role-playing game by reliable sources and was made in Japan, or (2) made in another country, but otherwise the franchise would be difficult to differentiate from a JRPG due to having common traits found in JRPGs such as: anime/manga character designs, RPG elements, fantasy setting and ...
JRPGs essentially need themes and settings used in Japanese modern literature. Technological advancement vs. living in harmony with nature, Country-City dynamics and fish out of water scenarios because of it, opening of borders to foreigners and the distrust/distaste at the circumstances around doing so, importance of landmarks both natural and manufactured, exploration tempered with ...
The first is the literal minded one: a JRPG is a Role Playing Game that was made in Japan. This school of thought accepts Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma under the JRPG umbrella in spite of their western design influences. The second is more liberally minded: a JRPG is an RPG that is informed by the design of games like Final Fantasy and Dragon ...
Final Fantasy IX, turned based. This has the best/strongest medieval setting of any FF afaik, and possibly of all JRPGs. It also has Chocobo Hot & Cold and the associated treasure hunting, which imo are the best sidequests/mini-games in the series. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, turn based.

Xenoblade (esp 2 and 3) and Shin Megami Tensei V are the best JRPG exclusives. Astral Chain leans into the action a lot more than JRPG elements but there are enough there to mention it because it's an amazing game (and exclusive) I like Tokyo Mirage Sessions even though it's weird as shit and not for everyone. 9.
That being said, if there is a JRPG on the PS4 with a mediocre story but great gameplay, or vice versa, I would still like to hear about it! Edit: I forgot to mention that the games I'm currently interested in are Ni No Kuni (1 and 2), Persona 5, Trails of Cold Steel and Tales of Berseria. Which of these would be a good starting point?
I consider japanese roleplaying games JRPGs, yes. Most people do, and that's good enough for me. I consider the Pokemon games a JRPG because they are clearly derived from turn-based forebears, complete with attacks, items, the ability to flee, an attack order based on a speed stat, and party management.
