South Berwick is a town in York County, Maine, United States. The population was 7,467 at the 2020 census. [3] South Berwick is home to Berwick Academy, a private, co-educational university-preparatory day school founded in 1791. The town was set off from Berwick in 1814, followed by North Berwick in 1831.
Punkintown (or Punkin Town [1]), once known as Emerytown, [2] Emery Town, [3] or Emeryville, [4] was a village situated at the corners of South Berwick, Eliot, and York, Maine from the 1800s through the early 1900s. At its peak, between seven and ten families gave the small town its population of somewhere between 30 and 40 people.
The Hamilton House is set on 50 acres (20 ha) of land overlooking the Salmon Falls River, the border between South Berwick and Rollinsford, New Hampshire.It is a 2 + 1 ⁄ 2-story wood-frame building, with a hip roof, clapboard siding, four brick chimneys symmetrically placed in its outside walls, and gabled dormers on all four elevations.
Maine State Route 4 passes through the center of the village, leading north-northeast 17 miles (27 km) to Sanford, and southwest across the Salmon Falls River, where New Hampshire Route 4 continues 4 miles (6 km) to the city of Dover. State Route 236 leads northwest four miles to Berwick village and south 12 miles (19 km) to Kittery.
Frost's Hill is a rise of land just north of the uppermost reaches of the York River in far eastern Eliot. In colonial days, this area was part of Kittery.The Frost property is located off Frost's Hill Road, now surrounded by a modern subdivision, and is accessed via Garrison Drive.
