In 1995, Pope John Paul II divided the Diocese of Reno-Las Vegas into the Diocese of Reno and the Diocese of Las Vegas. He appointed Daniel F. Walsh, previously bishop of Reno-Las Vegas, as the first bishop of Las Vegas. The second bishop of Las Vegas was Joseph A. Pepe of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, named by John Paul II in 2001. [7]
Guardian Angel Shrine was opened on October 2, 1963. In 1977 Bishop Norman McFarland of the recently re-designated Diocese of Reno-Las Vegas chose the shrine as the co-cathedral. The diocese was divided in 1995 and the Diocese of Las Vegas was established. [3] Guardian Angel retained its status as a cathedral.

George Leo Thomas (born May 19, 1950) is an American prelate of the Catholic Church who has served as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Las Vegas in Nevada since 2023. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Las Vegas from 2018 to its upgrade as archdiocese in 2023.
Gordon was relocated again in 1994 to become administrator and then pastoral administrator of St. Christopher Parish in North Las Vegas, Nevada, where he would remain for the next eight years. [3] [2] On March 21, 1995, Gordon was incardinated into the new Diocese of Las Vegas when John Paul II separated it from the Diocese of Reno-Las Vegas.
