Duluth's Mesaba Avenue (Highway 194) travels through the Central Hillside neighborhood. Many residents consider the area west of Mesaba Avenue to be the Observation Hill neighborhood, which is not included on official city maps. Mesaba Avenue, Lake Avenue, and Fourth Street are three of the main routes in the community.
Enger bequeathed a sizable portion of his estate to the city of Duluth. This included the land known as Enger Hill which includes Enger Park and Enger Golf Course. [5] [6] [7] The tower was first dedicated by Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha of Norway on June 15, 1939. Enger Tower and Park were renovated during 2011.
The area was originally frequented by hunters. "Hawk hill", as it was known, was a favorite location for shooting birds of prey. [3] However, because the site was within the city limits of Duluth, the Duluth Bird Club (which later became the Duluth chapter of the Audubon Society) succeeded in having an ordinance enforced there prohibiting the discharge of firearms within city limits.
The museum is in Duluth's Canal Park near the Aerial Lift Bridge and overlooks the entrance to the Duluth-Superior harbor. The museum and grounds are all property of the U.S. federal government. All visitors are welcome to visit this museum without paying.
