Its capital town is Embu. The district has a population of 278,196. [1] The district was created by the colonial government as part of the divisions of the colony. Prior to independence, Kirinyaga District was carved out of Embu. [2] As a district that existed prior to 1992, Embu County was effected based on the district's boundaries in 2013.
It is one of four constituencies of Embu County and it was established for the 1997 elections. According to the 2019 population census, Manyatta has a total population of 206,678 people. The constituency houses most of administrative offices and headquarters including the county governor's residence and the former Eastern Province headquarters.
The province was principally inhabited by the Meru, Kamba, Embu, and several pastoralist communities. In 1979, its population was 2.7 million; in 1999, 4,631,779 (according to the 1999 census) and in 2009 the province would have had a population of 5,668,123. [ 2 ]
