Allen was born in New Haven, Connecticut.He grew up in New York. He graduated from Goddard College, and attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 1972.. He graduated from Ohio University with an M.A. in 1986 and a Ph.D. in 1989.
He then played from 1925 to 1927 in a revue called Ed Daily's Black and White Show, as a member of Joe Jordan's group, the Sharps & Flats. [3] Between 1927 and 1937 Allen recorded extensively with Clarence Williams. [2] Allen also accompanied vocalist Bessie Smith on some recordings, and recorded in several bands of King Oliver's. [3]

Edgar Van Nuys Allen (June 22, 1900 – June 14, 1961) was an American medical doctor who was a native of Cozad, Nebraska. He is remembered for his contributions as a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota .
