St. Regis River as seen from Azure Mountain, town of Waverly. The St. Regis River (or rivière Saint-Régis in Quebec) is an 86-mile-long (138 km) [2] river in northern New York in the United States. It flows into the Saint Lawrence River at the hamlet of Saint Regis in the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation.
The lake is a popular fishing spot partly because it is close to the St. Regis River which is stocked with over 10,000 trout each year. The lake itself harbors different species of fish including splake, atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout, american eel, lake trout, landlocked salmon, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and brown bullhead.
The Saint Regis Canoe Area in Adirondack Park is the largest wilderness canoe area in the Northeastern United States and the only designated canoe area in New York state. It is closed to motorized vehicles. Among the 50 ponds (small lakes) and lakes are Upper Saint Regis Lake, part of the Seven Carries route, and Saint Regis Pond.
Saint Regis Pond is a 388-acre (1.57 km 2) pond, the largest in the Saint Regis Canoe Area in the Adirondacks in northern New York state. It drains into the west branch of the St. Regis River. It is part of the "Seven Carries" canoe route. [1] The pond is 1.6 miles (2.6 km) long. There are four small islands and several designated campsites.
Thus 275 miles of the St. Regis River has been reopened to migratory fish that spend part of their lives in the Atlantic Ocean. [9] In 2013 the tribe received a $19 million settlement from "GM, Alcoa, and Reynolds for pollution of tribal fishing and hunting grounds along the St. Lawrence River". [9]
