[6] Salisbury is the largest city in the state's Eastern Shore region, with a population of 33,050 at the 2020 census. Salisbury is the principal city of the Salisbury, Maryland Metropolitan Statistical Area.
In 1726, Colonel Isaac Handy purchased 960 acres of undeveloped land from Joseph Pemberton. In 1741, Handy built Pemberton Hall. [1] Handy died in 1762. At the time of his death, he owned 1,500 acres of plantation land and 16 slaves.

Major Levin Handy purchased 357 acres (1.44 km 2) of land outside of Salisbury in 1795 and began construction of this Federal-style building later that year. [2] Due to lack of funds stemming from severe medical problems, Major Handy discontinued construction of the mansion and put it up for sale in 1803. [2]
