Hkakabo Razi was established as a natural reserve on January 30, 1996, and as a national park on November 10, 1998. The Khakaborazi National Park is the last stronghold for biodiversity in Myanmar. The extraordinarily rich flora and fauna, ranging from lowland tropical to alpine species still await proper research and identification.

Hkakabo Razi, the country's highest point at 5,881 m (19,295 ft), is located at the northern end of the country. This mountain is part of a series of parallel ranges that run from the foothills of the Himalaya through the border areas with Assam , Nagaland and Mizoram .
Gamlang Razi has been measured at 5,870 ±2 m (19,259 ft). It makes the highest mountain in Southeast Asia whose height has been measured exactly by GPS. Hkakabo Razi has not yet been measured via GPS. However, Hkakabo Razi may still be the highest peak according to a recent expedition to that peak.
It is the last town encountered when hiking northwards to Hkakaborazi National Park and the highest peak of Myanmar, Mt. Hkakabo Razi. Nogmung is also the gateway for Tahaundam, the northernmost village of Myanmar. Nogmung is famous for its bird diversity, and many endemic species are postulated to exist there.
The border begins in the north at the tripoint with India just north of the Diphu Pass [a] and then runs briefly north-east, across the Nanmi Pass and Hkakabo Razi (5,881 m), the highest mountain in Southeast Asia.
