The 800 metres at the Summer Olympics has been contested since the first edition of the multi-sport event. The men's 800 m has been present on the Olympic athletics programme since 1896. The women's event was first held in 1928, making it the first distance running event for women.
The women's 800m competition consisted of heats (Round 1), semifinals and a final. Twenty-four athletes advanced from the heats to the semifinal round. The top two competitors from each of the eight heats qualified for the semifinals along with the eight fastest losers.
For the women's 800 metres event, the qualification period was between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024. [ 7 ] 48 athletes were able to qualify for the event, with a maximum of three athletes per nation, by running the entry standard of 1:59.30 seconds or faster or by their World Athletics Ranking for this event.
The Paris Games will run through Aug. 11.
