In 1858, the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad was completed when the final 96-mile (154 km) stretch of rail from Goldsboro through Newport to Beaufort was laid. The community is also the site of numerous Civil War battlefields, forts, and strategic locations. Newport was occupied by Union forces for much of the war.

Seaview Terrace and hedge.. In 1907, whiskey millionaire Edson Bradley built a French-Gothic mansion on the south side of Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C. It covered more than half a city block, and included a Gothic chapel with seating for 150, a large ballroom, an art gallery, and a 500-seat theatre—90 feet by 120 feet, and several stories tall, completed in 1911—known as Aladdin's Palace.
The Newport Restoration Foundation was founded by Doris Duke in 1968 in Newport, Rhode Island to preserve early housing stock including 18th century colonial homes. Former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was the foundation's vice president. [1] [2] It is the largest collection of vernacular architecture in the Northeastern United States.
Château d'Haroué. In 1998, Vernon Court was acquired by Laurence and Judy Cutler, founders of the National Museum of American Illustration.
