On 21 July 2023, a consultation for route SL2 was opened by Transport for London, and closed on 4 September the same year. [1] [2] It was awarded on 20 October 2023, and was introduced on 2 March 2024, using existing Alexander Dennis Enviro400H Citys. [3]
The service was slightly re-routed between Morden and North Cheam. When next tendered, the route passed to Metrobus' Croydon garage on 30 August 2008. [3] Metrobus successfully tendered to retain the route, with a new contract commencing on 31 August 2013. [4] [5] On 1 September 2018, operation of the route was taken over by Quality Line.

Upon being re-tendered, on 30 June 2007 it passed to Quality Line with new Alexander Dennis Enviro400s. It was the first double deck contract won by Quality Line. [ 8 ] The route was diverted via Surbiton Hill Road instead of Surbiton station at the same time, thus the route was restored to its original routing.
