The Edgar Zabriskie Residence is located at 3524 Hawthorne Avenue in the Bemis Park neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska, United States. It was built in 1889 as one of the first homes in Bemis Park. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and was designated an Omaha Landmark in 1980. [3]
The legislature voted to close the home in 1953; it was argued that any unwed mothers could receive care in Omaha at the hospital of University of Nebraska Omaha, or at the Child Saving Institute. The Old People's Home was initiated by the Women's Christian Aid Association, one of Omaha's first private charitable organizations. Founded in 1883, the women's group raised funds to construct the two-story brick building in 1917. The building was converted from a nonprofit home to a residential retirement center in 1988. [3]
