A shako (/ ˈ ʃ æ k oʊ /, / ˈ ʃ eɪ k oʊ /, or / ˈ ʃ ɑː k oʊ /) is a tall, cylindrical military cap, usually with a visor, and sometimes tapered at the top. It is usually adorned with an ornamental plate or badge on the front, metallic or otherwise; and often has a feather, hackle , or pompom attached at the top.
Busby is the English name for the Hungarian prémes csákó ('fur shako') or kucsma, a military head-dress made of fur, originally worn by Hungarian hussars. In its original Hungarian form the busby was a cylindrical fur cap, having a bag of coloured cloth hanging from the top.
In 1848, the red coat was exchanged with a Double-breasted dark blue jacket, and the cumbersome shako was replaced with a more practical kepi. [10] [11] In 1880, the uniforms saw minor updates, along with a colour change of the hats, which had been made dark blue a few years prior. [9] [10]
