Founded in 1804, it is a four-year boarding and day high school for students in grades 9-12 and postgraduate. A middle school, with grades 6–8, offers boarding for grade 8 students. The academy is located in the center of the town of Wilbraham, 75 miles (121 km) from Boston and 150 miles (240 km) from New York City.
Green Meadows Elementary School opened in 1956. In 1956, Hampden joined with the neighboring town of Wilbraham in a unified school district for grades 9–12. Monson is in eastern Hampden County, crossed by Massachusetts Route 32, which leads north from the center of town 4 miles (6 km) to Palmer and south 5 miles (8 km) to the Connecticut border. Springfield is 15 miles (24 km) to the west, Worcester is 34 miles (55 km) to the northeast, and Hartford, Connecticut , is 37 miles (60 km) to the southwest.
