Forest Research Institute campus, Dehradun, India. The Forest Research Institute (abbr. FRI; Hindi: वन अनुसन्धान संस्थान) is a Natural Resource Service training institute of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education and is an institution in the field of forestry research in India for Indian Forest Service cadres and all State Forest Service cadres.
Headquartered in Dehradun, its functions are to conduct forestry research; transfer the technologies developed to the states of India and other user agencies; and to impart forestry education. The council has 9 research institutes and 4 advanced centres to cater to the research needs of different bio-geographical regions.
The academy was constituted in the year 1987 by renaming the Indian Forest College, which was established in 1938 for training senior forest officers. [1] On 25 May 1987, Indian Forest College upgraded to National Forest Academy through a resolution and given a formal name "Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy". [2]
