Penney, along with his partner Ralph W. Gwinn, invested heavily in Florida real estate in the 1920s, especially Clay County in northeast Florida around Jacksonville. They established Penney Farms (an experimental farming community), which provided the basis for the Foremost Dairy Products Company. [2]
Penney Farms is a town in central Clay County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Jacksonville, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area . The population was 821 at the 2020 census, up from 749 at the 2010 census.
The dairy was sold to Velda Farms in January 1996. [3] The land that constituted the dairy headquarters and farm was a sizable piece of property located off Bowden Road on the city's south side. The land was redeveloped in 2000 as an office park known as The Silos, a reference to the land's previous appearance and function. [4]
Mr. Penney was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 1976. In 1926, Penney founded a retirement community in Northeast Florida for retired ministers in honor of his father. Today that community is still in existence, bearing his name, and is located in the town that also bears his name, Penney Farms, Florida.
The Memorial Home Community Historic District (also known as Penney Retirement Community) is a U.S. historic district (designated as such on February 3, 1999) located in Penney Farms, Florida. The district is bounded by SR 16, Caroline Boulevard, Wilbanks Avenue, and Studio Road. It contains 24 historic buildings and 2 structures.
