In 1997, Orascom Telecom Holding (OTH) was established as a separate entity to consolidate the telecommunications and technology interests of the Orascom group of companies established in 1976. [4] Founded in 1998 as part of the Orascom company, it became the largest cellular operator in the Middle East in only five years.

Naguib Sawiris is an investor in Mobinil, Egypt's main mobile phone company, and has expanded into Algeria, Tunisia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and even North Korea. He has also invested through affiliates in Italy (through Wind Telecomunicazioni SpA and Canada (through Globalive Wireless and its Wind Mobile ).
Then, in June 2007, Orascom further purchased the remaining shares under Saif Group's control to become Jazz's 100% owner. In 2010, Dutch operator VEON agreed to acquire most of the telecom assets of Orascom, including Jazz, in a $6.5 billion deal, creating the world's fifth-largest mobile network operator by subscriber base.
