Newcastle is a settlement in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Formerly a military hill station for the British Army it is now a training centre for the Jamaica Defence Force . The Blue Mountain and John Crow Mountain National Park in which Newcastle is located was established in 1992.

The English conquest of Jamaica in 1655 resulted in Roman Catholicism being officially proscribed and its adherents forced underground, with the Church of England replacing it as the official church of the colony. [8] The English destroyed Catholic churches and monasteries, and demanded all of the clergy to leave the island. [5]

The cathedral was built after the destruction, in the earthquake of 1907, of the Church of the Holy Trinity in the Duke and Sutton streets. The northern coast of Saint James Parish has several long sandy beaches: Lover's Beach, Newcastle Beach and Long Haul Bay. The more easterly part however is mostly rocky coast.
