Volvo 850 R estate, England. In the spring of 1996, Volvo introduced a new high-performance Volvo 850 as a replacement for the hugely successful limited edition T-5R. [36] [43] Volvo decided there should be no direct successor to the T-5R, but due to its success, Volvo decided to develop a new high-performance model. [36]
The 1995 Volvo 850 T5-R was the first Volvo branded with the R marque. For 1995, the special limited edition 850 T-5R was offered, and was a commercial success, leading Volvo to produce a second run in 1996. Originally, it was to be called 850 Plus 5.
It is equipped with Bosch Motronic 4.3 engine management. The 850 R models come with a TD04HL-16T turbo, S70 R and V70 R models come with a TD04HL-18T turbo. Applications: 1996–1997 Volvo 850 badged as 850 R [102] [nb 6] [103] 1998 Volvo S70 badged as S70 R [nb 7] 1998 Volvo V70 badged as V70 R and V70 R AWD [nb 8]
1982–1996 D24T — 2.4 L (2,383 cc) inline six-cylinder SOHC, 80–90 kW (109–122 PS) — Volvo 740, Volvo 760, Volvo 780, Volvo 940, Volvo 960 1990s–2000 D5252T — 2.5 L (2,461 cc) Audi Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) inline five-cylinder SOHC, 103 kW (140 PS; 138 bhp) — Volvo 850 , Volvo S70 / Volvo V70 , early Volvo S80s
The first generation V70 was an improved development on the basis of the Volvo 850 estate. [23] Its overall design became more rounded doing away with the 850's square edges. Among the many changes were a completely revised front end, fully painted bumpers and side trim and clear indicator lenses all around.
In 1994, TWR returned to the BTCC, allied with Volvo. This partnership was responsible for the 850 Estate racing car, which was only rendered uncompetitive when the FIA allowed the use of aerodynamic aids in 1995. TWR then built and ran the works 850 Saloon with six wins in 1995 and five wins in 1996, and S40 securing one win in 1997 in the BTCC.
Concerning the T5-R, there is also a slight mistake in the article. The T5-R was a special version of the T5, adding a 30 second overboost which could be activated by the push of a button, powering the car to 240bhp. The later R models had 250bhp all the time, without any additional overboost features.
The Volvo Modular engine was introduced in the 1991 Volvo 850 sedan and was used in various Volvo models, along with the Ford Focus ST and Ford Focus RS models. All of the straight-five petrol engines used by Volvo and Ford were built at the Volvo Skövde engine plant in Skövde, Sweden, until their discontinuation in 2016.
