During a holiday in The Netherlands in 1974, Johnny ended up in discothèque Ma Belle Amie as a DJ. Owner Tee-Set singer/producer Peter Tetteroo discovered Rodrigues and chose to make a single. Everything that was recorded under the name of Johnny & Orquesta Rodrigues was in actual fact played by the Tee-Set band members.
"Ma Belle Amie" is a song by Tee-Set, released as a single from the album Ma Belle Amie. It reached No. 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 3 in Australia and Canada in 1970, [2] No. 1 in South Africa, [3] and reached the Top 10 across central Europe.
The bands were mostly popular only in the Netherlands, but a few bands found success internationally. In 1970, Tee-Set had a top 10 hit with "Ma Belle Amie" in many countries, while Shocking Blue did better with "Venus", which became the first ever No. 1 single by a Dutch band on Billboard Hot 100.
