Know about park regulations, wilderness permits, where to go, things to do, accessibility, and safety before you arrive: Observe posted speed limits and use pullouts to view scenery or wildlife, take pictures, and let other cars pass. Do not stop your vehicle in the road. Be aware of blind curves.
Familiarize yourself with the birds and mammals of the area. Know what time of day animals are active. Learn about their habitat. Learn wildlife signs such as tracks and scat. Bring binoculars or a camera lens with zoom capabilities. Wear clothing that blends in with environment. Take a hike or walk and tread quietly.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is located on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains in west-central Colorado. It exposes some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America.
Campgrounds at Black Canyon. Black Canyon offers two campgrounds - one on each rim. There is also a campground at the bottom of the canyon called East Portal. Although accessed through the park, East Portal is within the boundary of Curecanti National Recreation Area.
Road Conditions. All park roads are currently open. Road improvement projects on the South Rim will cause delays up to 30 minutes and reduce available parking spots. For roads outside the park, check Colorado Department of Transportation.
The canyon is also home to over 46 mammal species, ranging from pint-sized voles to hefty black bears. Cold blooded creatures have also carved out niches, with over 12 species of reptiles and amphibians present.
