Biography. McCandless was born in Brawley, Imperial County, California, on July 23, 1927. He attended Los Angeles City schools and received a B.A., University of California at Los Angeles in 1951. McCandless served in the United States Marine Corps from 1945 to 1946 and from 1950 to 1952, and attained the rank of captain.
