The High Denomination Bank Notes (Demonetisation) Act, 1978 was an act of the Indian Parliament that demonetized the high-denomination banknotes of ₹1000, ₹5000, and ₹10000. It was first introduced as the High Denomination Bank Notes (Demonetisation) Ordinance, 1978, by the then President of India Neelam Sanjiva Reddy. [3]
The Specified Bank Notes (Cessation of Liabilities) Ordinance, 2016 was issued on 28 December 2016, ending the liability of the government for the demonetised banknotes. The ordinance also imposed fines on people found carrying out transactions with them after 8 November 2016, or holding more than ten of them after 30 December 2016.
It was first introduced by the Reserve Bank of India in 1938 under British rule and subsequently demonetized in 1946. Post-independence, the denomination was re-introduced in 1954. In January 1978, all high-denomination banknotes of ₹ 1000, ₹ 5000, and ₹ 10000 were demonetized in order to curb unaccounted cash money. [1] [2]
