In the early 1960s, an overpass was constructed to extend the highway to Bayers Road in Halifax. A new grade-separated interchange serving the Halifax International Airport opened in the 1972/73 fiscal year. [4] The Shubenacadie Bypass segment of Highway 102 started construction in 1974/75 and was opened to traffic in 1976/77.
The highway was a stub of the incomplete "Harbour Drive" project which would have connected Highway 102 with the Halifax waterfront, via a bridge over the Northwest Arm and a 6-lane highway through the south end along Water Street and along Barrington past Cogswell. [6]
An airfield in the West End, known as Chebucto Field, was built as the Halifax Civic Airport by the City of Halifax in 1931 on the former site of Blueball Farm. It served as the city's main airport until 1941, when it was closed and leased to the federal government to serve as an army camp in World War II. [4]
