Cheongsam is the traditional dress of Chinese women in China and the world, and is regarded as China's national treasure and women's national costume. It was formed in the 1920s and has since become the most common women's garment. Some scholars believe that its origin can be traced back to the deep clothes of the pre-Qin and Han Dynasties.
Ruqun. Ruqun (襦裙) is an item of traditional Chinese attire (Hanfu) primarily for women. It consists of a blouse (襦, ru) and a wrap-around skirt (裙, qun). It has a long history, and has been worn by women since the Warring States period. Generally, the blouse was tucked into the skirt.
Terminology. As English loanwords, both " cheongsam " and " qipao " describe the same type of body-hugging dress worn by Chinese women, and the words could be used interchangeably. [5] The term cheongsam is a romanization of Cantonese word chèuhngsāam (長衫; 'long shirt/dress'), which comes from the Shanghainese term zansae.
Two traditional forms of ruqun (襦裙), a type of Han Chinese clothing worn primarily by women. Cuffs and sleeves on the upper garment may be tighter or looser depending on style. A short skirt or weighted braid (with weight provided by a jade or gold pendant) is sometimes worn to improve aesthetics or comfort of the basic ruqun.
The women's clothing in the early Tang dynasty was quite similar to the clothing in the Sui dynasty; the upper garment was a short-sleeved short jacket with a low-cut; the lower garment was a tight-fitting skirt which was tied generally above the waist, and sometimes even up to the armpits, and a scarf was wrapped around their shoulders.
