William Leroy "The Big Whistle" Chadwick (October 10, 1915 – October 24, 2009) was the first US-born referee to serve in the National Hockey League (NHL). Despite being blind in his right eye, his on-ice officiating career spanned the greater part of the 1940s and 1950s, during which he pioneered the system of hand signals for penalties which is now used in all hockey games internationally.
The NHL sought to renegotiate the existing professional-amateur agreement with the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) in May 1946. The NHL proposed a flat payment of C$20,000 to cover all amateur players being signed to professional contracts, whereas the CAHA requested $2,000 for any player remaining in the NHL for more than a year. On 27 November 2020, Chadwick signed a new one-and-a-half-year deal with the club. [4] On 19 December 2020, Chadwick joined FC Halifax Town on a month-long loan. [5] He went straight into the FA Trophy match against Hartlepool United, scoring his first goal in the 3–3 draw and converted a penalty to put Halifax through 4–2 on penalties. [6]
