RJ11 is a jack, a physical interface, by definition used for terminating a single telephone line. RJ14 is similar, but for two lines, and RJ25 is for three lines. RJ61 is a similar registered jack for four lines, but uses 8P8C connectors.

Looking at the variety of RJ11 and RJ14 telephone cables that I have for connecting from the wall socket to the actual phone, most (but not all!) seem to be wired with the pair wiring reversed from one end to the other: pins 3/4 will be red/green at one end and green/red at the other. I am assuming that ordinary telephone equipment expects this.
In the mid-1970s, AT&T introduced modular connectors for the line cord and handset cords, requiring the RJ11 standard home telephone jack. Most customers who had Princess telephones were converted to modular jacks. In 1983, AT&T was preparing itself for divestiture of the Bell System.
