1521 (also known in United States as 1521: The Quest for Love and Freedom) is a 2023 historical drama film written by Mary Krell-Oishi and directed by Michael Barder. A Philippine-American co-production, it stars Danny Trejo, Bea Alonzo, Costas Mandylor, Michael Copon, Hector David Jr., Maricel Laxa, Vic Romano, Floyd Tena, Larissa Buendia.
The Battle of Mactan (Filipino: Labanan sa Mactan; Spanish: Batalla de Mactán) was fought on a beach in Mactan Island (now part of Cebu, Philippines) between Spanish forces led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan along with local allies, and Lapulapu, the chieftain of the island, on the early morning hours of April 27, 1521.
The film was made controversial in the Philippines for its inaccurate portrayal of the Filipino natives, especially Lapulapu, who led the Battle of Mactan that killed Magellan. [2] At the 34th Goya Awards, it earned a nomination for Best Animated Film. The OST "Confía en el Viento" was sung by La Oreja De Van Gogh.
