The township is located in southern Bedford County in the Cumberland Valley, a narrow Appalachian valley bounded by Wills Mountain to the west and Evitts Mountain to the east. Evitts Creek, a tributary of the North Branch Potomac River, flows southwards through the valley, and U.S. Route 220 passes through the center of the valley as well.
The Cumberland Valley is a northern constituent valley of the Great Appalachian Valley, within the Atlantic Seaboard watershed in Pennsylvania and Maryland.
The county also lies within the Cumberland Valley adjoining the Susquehanna River at its eastern border, stretching approximately 42 miles from the borough of Shippensburg on the west to the Susquehanna River in east Cumberland County. The oldest towns in the county are Shippensburg and Carlisle, each with its unique history.

Hagerstown Valley is located in Maryland in the United States. It is part of the Great Appalachian Valley, which continues northward as Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania, and southward as Shenandoah Valley in West Virginia and Virginia. Hagerstown Valley is bounded on the east by South Mountain, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The township is in northwestern Cumberland County, bordered to the northwest by Perry County, with the county line following the ridgecrest of Blue Mountain, the northern edge of the Cumberland Valley. The southern boundary of the township follows Conodoguinet Creek, a tributary of the Susquehanna River.
The Cumberland sheepdog is an extinct dog breed related to the border collie and other old working collie types. It is claimed to be one of the ancestors of the Australian shepherd [1] and in the early part of the 20th century some Cumberland sheepdogs were being referred to as border collies and may have been absorbed into the latter breed.
